The woman holds a Siamese porcelain box in her right hand. The Boxer Codex is a Spanish manuscript compiled in circa 1590, but named after the British historian Charles Ralph Boxer (1904-2000). He acquired the book about 350 years later. It depicts what Asia was like for Europeans in the 16th century. There are illustrations of ethnic groups in the Philippines, Southeast Asia, East Asia and Micronesia. The original owner was likely a Spanish governor general of the Philippines at the time.
