Summary

Description
English: King Chulalongkorn with Prince Vajirunhis and entourage wear the Raj Pattern costume, 1890. This photograph was taken by the German photographer August E. Kaulfuss (1861-1908). Kaulfuss worked and lived in Penang, Malaysia. The Raj Pattern (Ratcha Pataen, ราชปะแตน) is a folk costume of Thailand. All the Siamese (Thai) entourage are dressed in Raj Pattern with slight variations. Next to the King is the 11 year old boy: Crown Prince of Siam, Maha Vajirunhis (1878–1895). Prince Vajirunhis wears the Raj Pattern with white dress socks.

The original royal portrait has the following caption in German: "Penang: Der König von Siam, Kronprinz und Gefolge vor dem Hause des Radjah von Renong. 12. Mai 1890."

In 1890, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) made an unofficial tour of the Malay Peninsula and the western coast of Siam, departed from Samut Prakan on the royal barge "Ubon Buraphatit" and reached Chumphon. From there, he traveled by land to Krabi before boarding a waiting royal barge to Ranong, Phuket, Phang Nga, Trang, Tarutao Island, Langkawi, and Penang (then under British rule). He then visited several other cities before returning to Bangkok.

During this tour, he was a guest of the "Ko" or "Na Ranong" family. The governor of Ranong at the time, Phraya Rattanasetthi (Ko Simkong), invited him to stay at his mansion in Penang for several days.
