English: King Chulalongkorn wears the Raj Pattern costume, 1890. This photograph is taken by the German photographer August E. Kaulfuss (1861-1908). Kaulfuss worked and lived in Penang, Malaysia. The Raj Pattern (Ratcha Pataen, ราชปะแตน) is a folk costume of Thailand.
The original royal portrait has the following caption in German: "Penang: S. M. Chulalongkorn, König von Siam, 12. Mai 1890 im Hause des Radjah von Renong." In 1890, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) made an unofficial tour of the Malay Peninsula and the western coast of Siam, departed from Samut Prakan on the royal barge "Ubon Buraphatit" and reached Chumphon. From there, he traveled by land to Krabi before boarding a waiting royal barge to Ranong, Phuket, Phang Nga, Trang, Tarutao Island, Langkawi, and Penang (then under British rule). He then visited several other cities before returning to Bangkok. During this tour, he was a guest of the "Ko" or "Na Ranong" family.
