Chuan Leekpai is a descendant of the "Baba Kiat" (峇峇子) ethnic group.

This wedding photograph shows Yiew Kim Thuan (Miss Thuan Chu Hong)* and Lue Tan Huat (Mr. Niyom Leekpai)**. Both are the parents of Mr. Chuan Leekpai, former two-term Prime Minister and two-term Speaker of the House of Representatives, from Trang Province.

Miss Thuan's ancestors migrated from Peng Ho District, Jiangsu Province, while Mr. Niyom Leekpai's ancestors migrated from Lam Oa District, Jiangsu Province. They migrated so long ago that by this generation, Thai was used more than Chinese, or even not at all.

This photo was taken in 1934, the year they got married. In those days, grooms preferred to wear Western suits. The bride wears a traditional Bayu Panjang*** dress, adorned with three brooches called Kerosang Ibu-Anak (mother-child), and her hair is styled in a bun called Chak Eboy. This style of dress is the same throughout Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang, Satun, Penang, Malacca, and Singapore. We call this cultural expression Peranakan culture, or more specifically, Baba Nyonya culture.

The ancestors of the current Speaker of Parliament were Chinese immigrants who married local Thais for many generations. They have expressed Baba culture, or Straits Chinese culture, through their clothing as seen in Trang province. The language used is predominantly Thai, because Trang is a city within Siamese territory and had close contact with Bangkok and other southern cities. This has resulted in the Straits Chinese in Trang having a stronger Thai influence than a Chinese one.

However, the wedding photos of this couple confirm that at least the bride is a “Baba Kia” (峇峇子 = daughter of a Baba), so it can be inferred that... The Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Chuan Leekpai, is also a "descendant of the Baba" (Burmese ethnic group) for that reason.
