It borders [[Thalang district|Thalang]] to the north, [[Mueang Phuket district|Mueang Phuket]] to the east and south, and the [[Andaman Sea]] to the west.

Kathu is the district which includes the tourist beach of [[Patong Beach|Patong]]. Kamala Beach to the north is much less developed.

==History==

During the reign of King [[Mongkut]] (Rama IV) in the early [[Rattanakosin period]], Kathu suffered a tragedy when two rival Chinese [[Triad (organized crime)|triad gang]]s were killed here. Gangsters from Mueang Phuket lured members of the Kathu gang to a meal, seizing the opportunity to burn them alive. A total of 413 people were killed, with only one survivor. Today, a shrine named Tong Yong Su ({{lang-zh|忠勇祠}}; [[pinyin]]: ''zhōngyǒng cí''), meaning "the shrine of courageous and upright ancestors", stands in their memory. ==Administration==
The district is divided into three sub-districts (''[[tambon]]s''), which are further subdivided into 14 villages (''[[muban]]s''). Patong has town (''[[thesaban mueang]]'') status, Kathu has sub-district municipality (''[[thesaban tambon]]'') status, and Kamala is led by a [[tambon administrative organization]] (TAO). Each of the municipalities has the name of the sub-district.
